Cortez Fishing Festival - Bradenton - Is This Weekend

You've got an opportunity this week-end to contribute to the preservation of sport fishing, here around Key West, on the coasts of Florida and throughout the world.

The annual Cortez Fishing Festival is being held this week-end (February 16, 2013) in Bradenton, Florida. For some of us, particularly here on Key West it's a bit of a drive but it should be a lot of fun and it supports a great cause. Admission is a whopping $3.00 and kids get in free.

The festival has been held annually to continue payments on the 95 acre FISH preserve along the Sarasota bay. The Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (FISH) is a private organization of citizens who are concerned about overfishing. This year they are expected to make their final payment on the land.

What this means to residents of Key West is that the FISH preserve in Sarasota helps preserve the fish populations here around Key West. That means our fishing industry here, especially sport fishing charters here on Key West, thrive due to the efforts of FISH. The sport fishing charters here attract tourism to Key West which helps our economy overall.

We'd like to thank FISH and all the people who have contributed to that project over the years. You're doing a great job!!
